Media Essay

Josh Randle                                                                                                           Media Essay
In this media essay, i am going to be explaining how my research has made me prepare and helped me with my pre-production for my magazine. Textual analysis helped me with how media differs with a range of audiences and also how the media can destroy or praise certain images by stereo typing. This is a key feature i have taken it on in my magazine because without stereo typing, the wrong and different audiences would be attracted to my magazine which would not be very good as they would not buy it, and the audience i am focusing on would not buy my magazine either. I looked at other sports magazines such as sports illustrated for some help and this gave me ideas and gave me an understanding of sports magazines, this also helped me with the type of fonts and set out of the magazine. i started to understand and realize how to organize my title, subheadings and my picture lay out. My survey results gave me ideas and i came to the conclusion that my magazine should be to do with sport. This is because my results showed me that the majority of the people who answered and completed  my survey read sports magazines more than other magazines. In my survey i asked questions such as where and when do people read their magazines and the results showed me that most of the people who answered my survey said they read on the toilet or at places such as hairdressers and barbers. Sports magazines tended to be the favorite and it being the favorite makes it the most popular which means it will be bought more than other magazines.  I am also very interested and know a lot about sport so this works well for me as its very much the kind of magazines i read as well. This has helped me choose my target audience because my survey gave me the results of an audience of an age range of about 20-40 and Male which is going to be the most targeted gender as after all, it is about sports which most men talk about most of their spare time. The male target audience will hopefully be drawn to my magazine as the front cover has a sports headings and it also has a picture of a sports superstar attracting sports fans.Again with the stereotyping, i will be putting a sports star on the front cover with catchy and interesting headlines to draw my audience in, the sports star will attract most male sports fans as he is a loved footballer and he has been injured recently which has heart broken a lot of fans, . i have chosen the target audience gender being male and the age being 20-40 years because generally males love and live sport and especially in between the age i have chosen. This target audience should be a real hit as sport is always an interest towards the target audience.

Magazine Textual Analysis

This is the Zoo magazine which has a target audience of males from the age of 18-30 in the socioeconomic groups of C1, C2 and below. The main headline is 'Comedy Special!' It has this Headline because it draws people in, most people love comedy and this is why it has this as its headline. And this relates to the main image in the middle of Keith Lemon who is a comedy genius and will attract a lot of attention as many people love him. The Girls are both wearing red which also brings out Keith Lemons red nose and the colour red connotate the meaning of sex and love which the girls are also clearly representing. The representations being shown in this magazine is a sexual representation as of the two women next to Keith Lemon are sexy and give off that impression. Another representation is comedy as it has a number of humerus cover lines supporting this. the coverlines relate to the target audience as the target audience will be watching these comedy shows such as Celebrity Juice and  Inbetweeners as they will be at home and finished work.

Textual Analysis George Ezra- Blame it on me

George Ezra- Blame It On Me
Textual analysis
the first scene has a long shot of several birds flying in a blue sky over a town which sets up the scenes of where it is. then there is a crane shot coming down into the scene in which George Ezra is being filmed. Then there is a extreme long shot of George standing next to someone and it gives the detail in what they are both wearing and what George is carrying. then there is close ups of the man speaking to him. Then as soon as George Ezra starts singing, there is a low angle camera showing that he is the dominant figure to be focusing on. After that the camera focuses on two girls with a close up showing their expressions. then there is a birds eye view of birds faeces falling on him and as it has landed on his shirt there is an extreme close up of the bird faeces. the camera angle of when he is walking down the street is a dolly shot as it is tracking his movement. a thunder cloud appears above his head and you can hear the rain and this is diegetic as you can see the source.
All throughout the video there is a non diegetic sound as it is a music video and the music will not be playing throughout the streets of what he is walking down.
the lighting is all high key as it is not a scary video and is a video throughout the day. throughout the video the colour blue is portrayed, from the shirt George Ezra is wearing to the garages, windows and the tops the rugby players are wearing. The colour blue represents power and intelligence.

Representation Task

Prince Harry is quite clearly in the upper class as he is royalty however he is a young man and he has a love to go partying and having some fun. The media has caught up with this and has caught him in the act in las Vegas being naked and having his fun with the Ladies. This is a negative representation of the royal family as Price Harry is up to no good. I have identified this because the public expect our Royal Family not to be going out messing around with women and ending up naked.

The London riots were a huge negative representation in the media for the lower class as thousands of lower class people took advantage of a young man being killed by the police and started looting shops and destroying areas in London.

Representations Task

Gender
Keith Lemon's comedy game show Celebrity Juice has the likes of Holly Willoughby and Fern Cotton being his assistants in the game show. He targets the both of them in quite a sexist way which shows a negative comedy which some people take offence however most people who watch the show love his humour.

Age
Gandalf is a perfect example of the representation in media of age as he is a wise old wizard who everybody looks up to. He is a positive representation of the elderly and i have identified this as characters such as Frodo always look up to him for knowledge and guidance.

Representation Task

This is a great example of how racism is portrayed in television shows as it firstly shows a non muslim male and people are in from everywhere to help him however when the actor dresses as a muslim he is ignored by nearly every single one, this is both positive and negative as there are people out there like the man at the end of this clip who helps out but the clip is mainly negative as most people ignore him due to his religion.
